Using the graph

Some notes (to be updated with visuals):

  • Use the search bar to search for a narrator. You do not need to use diacritics in the search. Click on one of the results to zoom in on a narrator’s node.
  • Use the network icon to switch between graphs.
  • Use the filter icon to filter nodes
  • Use the reset icon to reset the graph to normal view
  • An arrow pointing from person A to person B means that person A narrated a hadith to person B.
  • Click on a node in the graph to learn basic information about them in the pop-up on the top left. Click on the “more info” link in the pop up for more in-depth information on muslimscholars.info.
  • Click on an edge in the graph to learn basic information about the hadith transmitted in the pop-up on the top left. Click on the “more info” link in the pop up to read the hadith on sunnah.com

Glossary of terms

TermDefinition
Arabic calligraphic symbol for “صلى الله عليه وسلم” or “peace be upon him,” used respectfully when the Prophet’s name is mentioned
AbuFather. For example, Abu Salamah means “the father of Salamah.”
Ansar (singular: Ansari (m) or Ansariyyah (f)): Literally, the “helpers,” or the group of Muslims
who were already residents of Madinah, as opposed to the “Muhajirun,” or the immigrant
Muslims who migrated to Madinah with the Prophet ﷺ from Makkah.
bintdaughter. For example, Ḥafṣah bint ʿUmar means Ḥafṣah the daughter of ʿUmar.
faqeeh (f. faqīhah, pl. fuqahāʾ)someone who studies fiqh, Islamic jurisprudence.
fatwaa legal opinion on Islamic jurisprudence given by a scholar
fiqhIslamic jurisprudence
hadithoral traditions about the Prophet’s teachings. They can be his quotes or speeches, or
quotes from companion describing an action they witnessed him doing.
Hijrahmigration, usually in reference to the migration with the Prophet from Makkah to
Madinah
isnadthe chain of people who narrated a hadith
ibnson. For example, ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿUmar means ʿAbdullāh the son of ʿUmar.
mawlāservant. For example, Nāfiʿ mawlā ʿAbdullāh means Nāfiʿ the servant of ʿAbdullāh.
muḥaddith (pl. muḥaddithīn, f. muḥaddithah, f. pl. muhaddithāt)someone who studies and/or narrates hadith.
ṣaḥābahcompanions of the Prophet ﷺ, qualified as people who met or saw him in their lifetimes
sunnahthe lived practice of the Prophet ﷺ: his habits and way of life
Ummmother. For example, Umm Salamah means “the mother of Salamah.”
Umm al-Muʾminīnliterally, “The Mother of the Believers,” a title used for the wives of the Prophet ﷺ
tābiʿ (f. tābiʿiyyah, pl. tābiʿīn)the generation succeeding the companions: Muslims who never met the Prophet ﷺ but met his companions.
tabaʿ tābʿīnthe generation succeeding the tābiʿīn.
